Silica-coated calcium pectinate beads for colonic drug delivery

The aim of this work is to develop novel organic-inorganic hybrid beads for colonic drug delivery. For this purpose, calcium pectinate beads with theophylline are prepared by a cross-linking reaction between amidated low-methoxyl pectin and calcium ions. The beads are then covered with silica, starting from tetraethyoxysilane (TEOS), by a sol-gel process. The influence of TEOS concentration (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 M) during the process is studied in order to modulate the thickness of the silica layer around the pectinate beads and thus to control the drug release. Coffee grounds as filler for pectin: Green composites with competitive performances dependent on the UV irradiation.

Novel composite bioplastics were successfully prepared by filling pectin matrix with treated coffee grounds. The amount of coffee dispersed into the pectin was changed within a wide filler range. The morphology of the pectin/coffee hybrid films was studied by microscopic techniques in order to investigate their mesoscopic structure as well as the sizes distribution of the particles dispersed into the matrix. The micrographs showed that the coffee grounds are uniformly dispersed within the polymeric matrix. Edible coatings (EC) with mucilage of Opuntia ficus-indica or Aloe arborescens are promising to extend the shelf life of fresh-cut fruit products by reducing weight loss and microbial spoilage. In this work, fresh-cut kiwifruits (cv. Hayward) were coated in solutions with mucilage extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica (MC) and A. arborescens (AL). Maltose-conjugated chitosans induce macroscopic gelation of pectin solutions at neutral pH

Injectable polymer scaffolds are particularly attractive for guided tissue growth and drug/cell delivery with minimally invasive intervention. In the present work, "all-polymeric" gelling systems based on pectins and water-soluble maltose-conjugated chitosans (CM) have been developed. Maltose-conjugated chitosan has been synthesized at three different molar ratios, as evaluated by FITR analysis and fluorimetric titration. Characterization of Food Packaging Films with Blackcurrant Fruit Waste as a Source of Antioxidant and Color Sensing Intelligent Material

Chitosan and pectin films were enriched with blackcurrant pomace powder (10 and 20% (w/w)), as bio-based material, to minimize food production losses and to increase the functional properties of produced films aimed at food coatings and wrappers. Water vapor permeability of active films increased up to 25%, moisture content for 27% in pectin-based ones, but water solubility was not significantly modified. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break and Young’s modulus) were mainly decreased due to the residual insoluble particles present in blackcurrant waste.
